Nutraceutical Potential of Kulatha (Macrotyloma uniflorum): An Evidence-based Integration of Ayurvedic Wisdom and Contemporary Phytopharmacology

Abstract

The convergence of traditional knowledge systems and modern nutraceutical science offers a robust framework for developing functional foods that address chronic lifestyle disorders. Macrotyloma uniflorum (Lam.) Verdc., commonly known as Kulatha or horse gram, represents a quintessential example of an underutilized legume with a profound therapeutic history in Ayurveda, particularly for urolithiasis ( Ashmari ) and metabolic disorders. This comprehensive review integrates classical Ayurvedic pharmacodynamics with contemporary phytochemical analysis to validate the nutraceutical potential of Kulatha . Traditional texts characterize Kulatha by its Kashaya Rasa (astringent taste), Ushna Veerya (hot potency), and Tikshna Guna (penetrating quality), attributes that theoretically correlate with its verified lithotriptic and hypolipidemic activities. Modern analysis has identified a rich phytomatrix containing phenolic acids (ferulic and p-coumaric), flavonoids (quercetin and kaempferol), and specific proteins exhibiting protease inhibitory activity. Scientific evidence confirms multiple pharmacological mechanisms, including inhibition of calcium oxalate crystallization, potent antioxidant scavenging of free radicals, α-amylase inhibition for glycemic control, and significant anti-inflammatory effects mediated through phospholipase A2 (sPLA2) suppression. Despite its high protein content (22%–24%) and therapeutic versatility, Kulatha remains underutilized in global diets. This review synthesizes current evidence on its bioactive constituents, clinical efficacy, and processing technologies, advocating for its elevation from a “poor man’s pulse” to a premium functional food. The integration of ancient wisdom with evidence-based medicine underscores Kulatha ’s potential as a sustainable, therapeutic dietary intervention for contemporary health challenges.
