Nurse prescribing in multiple sclerosis: delivering evidence-based care in line with guideline updates

Lucy Ruscoe, Mhairi Coutts

The treatment landscape for multiple sclerosis has changed significantly over recent years. Independent nurse prescribing has become an important component of many multiple sclerosis services, supporting access to therapies, medication review and long-term disease management. The updated National Institute for Health and Care Excellence guideline on multiple sclerosis in adults (NG220) provides an opportunity to consider the contribution of nurse prescribers to evidence-based practice. This article examines the implications of NG220 for nurse prescribers, with focus on multiple sclerosis medicines optimisation, symptom management, relapse treatment, disease-modifying therapies monitoring and shared decision making. It explores ongoing challenges relating to clinical governance, workforce capacity and variation in access to treatments across the UK, and argues that nurse prescribers play an important role in supporting implementation of national recommendations while contributing to safe, effective and person-centred care.
