Ntlwanaboapeelo / Iziko (indigenous African kitchen)
Batlhalifi Nkgothoe, Siphokazi TauThis entry places boapeelo (Setswana) or iZiko (IsiXhosa), a place where food is prepared in an African home or during ceremonies, to centre women in the meaning-making of space and food, in and of African societies. The entry highlights the very complex nature within which bodies and space exist in postcolonial South Africa and to a broader extent, the Global South. We achieve this by presenting boapeelo / Iziko / as a place of food-making processes and experiences of and for African women, and the epicentre of households’ resilience.
