North River State “The Day the Campus Went Silent”
Johnny D. JonesAbstract
In recent years, institutions of higher learning have faced mounting challenges related to student mental health and campus safety. This case study examines the tragic events at North River State University, where a failure to coordinate mental health interventions and threat assessments led to a catastrophic outcome. Drawing on real-world parallels and best practices, this study explores the warning signs overlooked, the breakdown in communication across campus departments, and the aftermath that prompted systemic reform. The narrative is supplemented with contextual analysis and a set of discussion questions to facilitate critical reflection on risk management, ethical responsibilities, and the creation of safer campus environments.
