This study examines cognitive paradoxes in the use of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) among students of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, University of Khanh Hoa. Using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) with a purposive sample of 12 students surveyed between October and November 2025, the study identifies three recurring paradoxes: confidence in using GenAI unmatched by verification skills; ethical awareness that does not translate consistently into practice; and aspiration for intellectual autonomy alongside continued dependency on GenAI in core learning activities. Building on these findings, the study proposes a four-dimensional self-assessment competency framework: cognitive autonomy, academic critical thinking, digital ethics, and human-GenAI knowledge partnership, offering a conceptual basis for higher education institutions to design GenAI-governance policies and strengthen students’ digital competencies.
