Neuromelioidosis and Dental Practice: A Short Communication and Proposed Guidelines
S. K. Kamaladharani, Mouttoukichenin Surenthar
Neuromelioidosis, a rare but severe manifestation of melioidosis caused by
Burkholderia pseudomallei
, has recently emerged as a great concern in dentistry. Outbreaks in South India linked to contaminated saline used during dental procedures highlight the potential for iatrogenic transmission of this Tier 1 pathogen. Neurological involvement, though affecting only 3–5% of melioidosis cases, shows disproportionately high mortality. This communication synthesizes pathogenesis of neuromelioidosis, clinical features, its current evidence, emphasizing its dental relevance, and preventive strategies. Practical guidelines are proposed to strengthen infection control, mitigate transmission risk, and enhance awareness among dental professionals to safeguard patient safety.
