Neither inside nor outside of Eija-Liisa Ahtila’s House

Tarja Laine

This short article discusses Eija-Liisa Ahtila’s audio-visual installation Talo ( House ) (2002) through the notion of entanglement between human and natural systems. This entanglement is not simply a question of being intertwined with one another, but to be inseparable in a much more profound fashion. What Ahtila’s House embodies in meaning has to do with the mixed contingency of humans as beings-of-the-world and the fluidity of bodily boundaries, communicated especially by means of the sound design of the installation.
