Navigating the Third Space: Military Veterans in Higher Education
Wayne N. TaylorAbstract
“Navigating the Third Space: Military Veterans in Higher Education” explores the unique transitional experience of military veterans as they enter academic institutions, utilizing Anzalúa’s Border Theory (1987) as a framework. This chapter explores the concept of a “third space”—a metaphorical space where veterans reconcile their identities amidst military and academic cultures. The chapter examines the complexities veterans encounter in adapting to differing power structures, language barriers, and shifting perceptions of authors, which can lead to feelings of isolation and disorientation. Through resilience, community building, and tailored institutional support, veterans cultivate an academic identity that transcends these challenges, contributing to a richer, more inclusive academic environment. The chapter underscores the importance of linguistic inclusivity, resilience, and community support as essential components for facilitating veterans’ successful integration and fostering a sense of belonging within higher education.
