Nasolabial Cyst: A Series of 16 Cases From A Single Diagnostic Center

Objective
To present a retrospective and descriptive study of a case series of nasolabial cysts.
Methods
Sixteen cases of nasolabial cyst were retrieved from the archives of the Department of Oral Surgical Pathology‐Facultad de Odontología‐Universidad de Buenos Aires. Their clinical, imaging and histopathological features were analysed, and Ki‐67 immunohistochemistry was performed.
Results
All cases were unilateral, (7 cases‐54%, were located on the right side) and presented in women, with a mean age of 47 years. Computed tomography (seven cases) revealed a hypodense nodular image in the soft tissue; one case showed bone resorption. Treatment was enucleation through an intraoral approach. Microscopically, the cystic epithelial lining exhibited a papillary‐like endo‐exophytic growth pattern (13 cases‐81%), sac‐ or alveolar‐like intraepithelial acinar structures (5 cases‐31%) and whorl‐like rosette structures (4 cases‐24%). Goblet (15 cases‐94%), ciliated (15 cases‐94%) and hobnail (13 cases‐81%) cells were also observed. Ki67 expression was < 10%. Follow‐up was performed in 10 cases; no recurrence was reported.
Conclusions
Nasolabial cyst is a distinct pathological entity that needs to be included in the World Health Organization classification as a maxillofacial embryonic cyst. To our knowledge, this is the first case series reported in Argentina and one of the few reported in Latin America.
