Abstract

Transformative advances in the efficacy, simplicity, dosing, and safety profiles of antiretroviral therapy (ART) have revolutionized care for people with HIV. Yet, outdated or inaccurate conceptions about ART dosing and side effects, as well as laboratory testing, continue to influence treatment decisions. In the contemporary era of high resistance barrier second-generation integrase strand transfer inhibitors, two-drug regimens, and long-acting injectable options, the growing evidence base challenges certain longstanding assumptions and historical treatment paradigms. We review frequently encountered myths and misconceptions in modern HIV treatment, with the goal of updating infectious diseases clinicians and other HIV care practitioners.
