Musical Interlude: With Gratitude: Improvisation, Uncertainty, and the Emergence of Voice Piano
Alan TurryAbstract
This essay is a personal reflection on a course of music therapy where improvised songs were created collaboratively with a client living with cancer. Improvisation functioned as a space for engaging uncertainty, emotional expression, and relational connection between myself and Maria Logis, a creative, inspiring music therapy participant. Through improvised song, Maria articulated fear, resistance, and evolving self-awareness, while I responded musically at the piano, navigating the tensions inherent when working with someone in crisis. The process illustrates how music engagement can foster the emergence of voice, integration of experience, and transformation of internal relationships. The work also raises ethical considerations regarding authorship and public sharing. Improvisation is understood not as resolving uncertainty, but as creating a space in which it can be meaningfully lived.
