This research developed a participatory, multi-criterion strategy to support the contextual identification of energy ecotechnologies for rural communities. The proposal articulates three dimensions of analysis: (a) the energy needs of households, based on the services required, the devices used, and the fuels employed; (b) the financial conditions of households, considering income, saving capacity, and investment recovery period; and (c) compatibility with locally available natural resources. These dimensions are analyzed sequentially using a color-coded system that serves as a decision-support tool. The strategy was applied in two P’urhépecha communities as case studies and can be adapted to other contexts, provided that the criteria are reviewed according to socio-territorial conditions and community participation.
