Multicolor 3D Printed Orbital Models across the Chemistry Curriculum

Abstract

This chapter describes the fabrication and use of multicolor 3D-printed atomic and molecular orbital prints across and beyond the organic chemistry curriculum at Pomona College. These pedagogical efforts began during the COVID-19 pandemic and have been primarily focused on creating 3D orbital models for students in a two-semester organic chemistry course. Models have also been designed and informally used for in-class activities in general chemistry and inorganic chemistry courses and for potential use in physical chemistry and biochemistry courses. 3D model building has also been used by students in an upper-division computational chemistry course as a mechanism for understanding advanced bonding concepts and connecting with chemists at research-intensive institutions. Commemorative and celebratory objects, including orbital keychains, have also been produced.
