Multi-element 5G antenna utilizing element-level structural asymmetry for performance enhancement

Abstract

This paper focuses on the design of a novel 4-port antenna suitable for 5G smartphones operating in the 4–6 GHz band. Element-level structural asymmetry is leveraged to optimize the loss and coupling performance of the multi-element antenna. Relative orientation of the parameterized radiating elements is chosen based on extensive analysis of the current distribution and return loss characteristics. Characteristic modes are analyzed to identify the significant contributing modes, and equivalent circuit analysis is carried out to get insights into the radiation characteristics. Measurements closely matched with the results from simulations and modeling. Specific absorption rate analysis revealed that the radiation levels are within the prescribed safety limits while satisfying the other performance requirements. Hence, this antenna is suitable for 5G applications as it ensures user safety and also aligns with regulatory standards.
