Mucosal Advancement Flap Reconstruction of the Inferior Vermillion Lip Following Mohs Micrographic Surgery for Invasive Squamous Cell Carcinoma
Erika L. Sembrano, Nicole A. Skalka, Clifton S. HallA 65-year-old Caucasian male presents with invasive squamous cell carcinoma on the left inferior vermillion lip. He underwent four stages of Mohs micrographic surgery, during which perineural invasion was observed. Closure of the site was complicated by the size of the defect and tissue conservation. A mucosal advancement flap (MAF) was the closure technique of choice. The MAF is a valuable method of treatment due to its ability to preserve blood supply, maintain sensory nerve supply, and additionally, conserve esthetic features. Meticulous deliberation must be considered when choosing the MAF to avoid any damage to underlying structures and/or oral musculature, which can further lead to functional impairment and esthetic dissatisfaction from the patient.
