Motherhood and Mental Health in STEM
W. J. Lyzenga, J. R. AshnestThe transition to motherhood is a transformative process that often prompts women to reevaluate their identity, especially when balancing the demands of a STEM career. This shift can lead to mental health challenges, including postpartum depression and anxiety, which affect a significant percentage of new mothers. Role overload from managing both family responsibilities and professional aspirations can exacerbate chronic stress and emotional distress, impacting well-being. Many women experience these normal impacts of the emotional and mental load of parenting as personal failure or inadequacy. While practical solutions, such as task delegation and time management, can alleviate some burdens, educating mothers on how they can support their own mental health is crucial. Recognising one's position on the mental health continuum can be a powerful tool for managing well-being, helping mothers take steps to improve or stabilize their mental health before it worsens.
