Morphometric evaluation of the vertebral origin level, aortomesenteric angle, and distance of the superior mesenteric artery using computed tomography angiography

Aims: The aim of this study was to evaluate the vertebral origin level of the superior mesenteric artery (SMA), the aortomesenteric angle (SMA-angle), and the aortomesenteric distance (SMA-distance) using computed tomography angiography (CTA) in adults and to investigate their relationship with age and gender.Methods: This retrospective radiological anatomy study included abdominal CTA images of 1000 adults (500 females and 500 males) obtained between October 2021 and February 2024. The vertebral origin level of the SMA was determined relative to vertebral body subdivisions. The SMA-angle was measured in the sagittal plane and the SMA-distance in the axial plane at the level of the left renal vein. Statistical analyses were performed using SPSS software.
