Alzheimer’s disease is a prominent medical and social challenge of our time and stands as the leading cause of dementia, resulting in significant disability for those affected. Since no etiotropic therapy is available, prioritizing primary and secondary prevention through the management of the key factors contributing to the development of Alzheimer’s disease has become imperative for the medical community. In recent years, there has been an increasing focus on investigating modifiable risk factors, which may have the potential to prevent up to 45% of dementia cases over a person’s lifetime. This article provides an overview of 14 risk factors associated with dementia and examines the pathogenic mechanisms that connect these factors to the onset of Alzheimer’s disease.
