Modeling the Moon: lesson study in elementary science in the United States of America

Purpose

The purpose of this article is to share a research proposal from a Lesson Study focused on elementary science, while analyzing the cycle through Kager et al. 2023 framework.

Design/methodology/approach

Our approach was to conduct a Lesson Study cycle influenced by the Mills College Lesson Study Group and the Chicago Lesson Study Alliance.

Findings

We found that students' ability to use argumentation to models to learn science. When teaching, we found that bansho, notebook writing and using student discourse help students learn. We found that we can effectively plan Lesson Study through Zoom.

Originality/value

This article contributes to the goal of including teacher voices first-hand as knowledge producers within the Lesson Study community. It adds value by increasing the number of examples of Science-based Lesson Study in the literature.
