Mode 3 knowledge production, Helix models and hospesism as a structural element of innovation

Strahinja Djordjevic, Ákos Horváth, Jelena Pavlicic-Cerovic

This paper explores the value of considering together two bodies of literature that are rarely brought into relation with one another, namely Mode 3 knowledge production and Helix frameworks, on the one hand, and the literature on epistemic trespassing (particularly in the context of the idea of hospesism), on the other. It suggests that, while Mode 3 and Helix frameworks help explain why cross-domain engagement is often necessary and valuable, the literature on epistemic trespassing helps specify the conditions under which such engagement is epistemically legitimate, reliable, and beneficial. Together, these perspectives offer a stronger way of understanding responsible innovation in complex knowledge settings that depend on both deep specialization and interdisciplinary collaboration.
