Mint tea as an anti-androgenic agent: a clinical review and case report

Tracey Dennison

This paper explores the association between mint tea consumption and testosterone levels in women, particularly its implications for hormonal balance and treatment of androgen-excess disorders such as polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome (PMOS) (previously PCOS) and hirsutism. While mint tea is generally considered benign and is widely consumed for its soothing gastrointestinal effects, human studies suggest it may exert anti-androgenic effects. Drawing on published clinical research, this paper evaluates the evidence on how mint tea may influence testosterone metabolism in women, incorporating a case example of a peri-menopausal woman with hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD) and low testosterone levels, whose hormonal profile was impacted by heavy mint tea consumption.
