Mindful Consumption for Reinforcing Sustainable Lifestyles: Pathways Toward Regenerative Living
Aiman Khatoon, Anuj Pal Kapoor, Sangeeta SahneyAbstract
The rise of overconsumption and ecological degradation calls for researchers and policymakers to address the issue, identify the drivers, and propose practical solutions. In response to this issue, mindful consumption (MC) has emerged as a transformative paradigm for reinforcing sustainable lifestyles. This chapter systematically reviews and synthesizes the domain of MC to conceptualize the concept not merely as an individual behavioral adjustment but as a systemic enabler of regenerative futures. Drawing on a systematic narrative review, this chapter synthesizes 80 research articles published in the domain of MC. In this way the study identifies four key determinants and enablers of MC and integrates them into a framework that connects individual mindfulness to regenerative development.
The review findings reveal that while existing studies predominantly emphasize that MC is an individual awareness and ethical choice, limited attention has been given to the system-level mechanisms including policy, technological, and market structures that enable mindful practices to scale. This chapter therefore advances a conceptual framework illustrating how Industry 6.0 technologies (Artificial Intelligence (AI), blockchain, Internet of Things (IoT)) and participatory governance actors can support transparent, ethical, and restorative consumption ecosystems. Ultimately, the chapter argues for a paradigm shift from conservation toward Regeneration, embedding MC into institutional design, business strategy, and education to accelerate progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through conscious individual and collective action.
