Micro tensile bond strength of universal dental adhesives treated with Psidium Guava leaf extract to dentin

Suzan S. E. M. Hashim

Aim

To test the micro tensile bond strength of three dental universal adhesives Single bond Universal, Tetric N bond Universal, and Prim and bond Universal to dentin and the effect of adding three concentrations of Psidium guava leaf ethanolic extract to them.

Patients and methods

Sixty extracted third molars were embedded in resin. The occlusal enamel was removed, and pure adhesives as controls and with added 25, 50, and 100 μg/dl guava leaf extract (GLE) were applied to exposed dentine and cured. Light-cured composites were added in increments and cured. The specimens were cut suitable for a universal mechanical testing machine. Forces were applied until failure occurred, and the failure type was examined. Two-way ANOVA was used to compare different materials and concentrations, followed by a post hoc test. For comparing categorical data, a χ 2 test was performed.

Results

Single bond universal showed the highest micro tensile bond which was subjected to a significant drop after adding GLE. Adding 25 μg/dl GLE to the Tetric N bond universal results in an increase in bond strength.

Conclusions

The chemical composition of universal adhesives affects the bond strength to dentin.
