Micro-lordship and pervasiveness

My article is divided into two parts. It deals with two related but not overlapping themes, which share the common feature of addressing aspects of local domination that have hitherto been little studied. It is part of a collective research project begun in autumn 2023. The effort is to move away from the world of middle and high aristocracies, and to direct the analysis further downward: on the one hand, observing forms of domination that, due to their minute, small-scale character, have often escaped the attention of historians (the micro-lordship), and on the other hand, investigating characteristics of domination relations that reflect more clearly the perceptions of subordinates rather than those of the lords (the pervasiveness). In both cases, we are dealing with very long-term phenomena: in addition to analysing the knowledge currently available, the focus of my article will be on the question of whether for pervasiveness and mi-cro-lordships the history of the centuries considered in this volume was a history of change or continuity.
