Methodology for assessing sleep quality and its parameters in the context of neurophysiological and behavioral aspects

This paper reviews various parameters influencing sleep quality, including total sleep duration, sleep latency, continuity and stability (restfulness), sleep efficiency, duration of deep sleep, duration of REM sleep, and the sleep timing and regularity. The necessity of a comprehensive, multidomain approach to sleep quality assessment is highlighted, as it integrates these parameters to provide a holistic characterization of sleep. Such an approach enables quantitative data interpretation, facilitates longitudinal monitoring of individual sleep patterns, and supports comparative analyses across populations. Implementing comprehensive sleep quality assessments may help standardize evaluation methods and inform research, clinical practice, and daily life, thereby optimizing sleep and promoting well-being.
