Mesa Blanca con Elena

Aurora Levins Morales

Abstract

This image and text work creates an imaginary séance conversation with Raquel Heléne Hoheb, mother of William Carlos Williams, invoking her involvement in Mesa Blanca spiritism. The piece places her in the context of other overshadowed female relatives of famous men, draws out her unspoken Jewish identity, her experience of disability, and imagines an untrammeled artist’s life for her.
