Mechanisms of the Impact of Employee Attitudes and Awareness on the Functioning of Occupational Health and Safety Systems

Katarzyna Olejniczak-Szuster, Agata Kielesińska

Abstract

The increasing complexity of modern work environments highlights the importance of psychosocial factors in occupational health and safety (OHS). This study examines the impact of employee attitudes and awareness on OHS system effectiveness through a systematic review of 78 peer-reviewed articles published between 2020 and 2025, identified in ScienceDirect, Scopus, and Web of Science. The findings show that attitudes toward safety, risk, and organizational support, combined with procedural, risk-related, and psychosocial awareness, shape safety behaviors such as compliance and reporting. These behaviors directly influence accident rates and safety culture development. Safety leadership and psychosocial safety climate act as key moderating factors. The study proposes an integrated model linking attitudes, awareness, behavior, and OHS outcomes.
