Measurement and monitoring framework for nurturing an entrepreneurial climate in higher education institutions

Sanjeet Kumar Sameer

Purpose

This paper aims to categorize important organization-initiated drivers of the entrepreneurial climate from academics' perspectives into specific components and develops a comprehensive index, termed the Organizational Drivers of Entrepreneurial Climate for Academics' Index (ODECAI), for measuring and monitoring the performance of such initiatives.

Design/methodology/approach

This study has been conducted on a sample of 274 academics from higher education institutions in the agriculture sector from India. Responses were obtained through a survey method. The research was based on psychological climate theory and used a combination of techniques including principal component analysis and regression analysis, to develop the monitoring framework.

Findings

The paper categorizes organizational drivers into six components, namely initiators, activators, promoters, growth enablers, accelerators, and leapfrogs based on their varying roles in nurturing the entrepreneurial climate for academics. These six components taken together constitute the ODECAI. The study identifies the most appropriate method for calculating the ODECAI and provides an application methodology for measuring and monitoring organizational interventions aimed at shaping an entrepreneurial climate.

Practical implications

The study has wide implications for academics, higher education institutions, academic leaders, and policymakers involved in promoting academic entrepreneurship.

Originality/value

The study provides a comprehensive measurement and monitoring framework for nurturing an entrepreneurial climate from the perspectives of academics, an area that has largely been ignored in the extant research.
