Background/Aims

The postpartum period after preterm birth presents unique challenges. This study aimed to describe physical complications and self-care challenges experienced by early postpartum mothers after a preterm birth.

Methods

This cross-sectional study involved 300 mothers of preterm infants in Jiroft, Iran. Data on demographics and postpartum needs were collected via interviews and analysed using descriptive statistics.

Results

Participants commonly experienced fatigue (85.5%), lower back pain (82.5%) and wound pain (84.7%). Significant barriers to self-care included sleep problems (89.3%) and neglecting medication needs (90.8%). The hospital environment hindered basic hygiene (86.3%) and wound care (95.2%).

Conclusions

Mothers of preterm infants experience physical symptoms and systemic barriers to self-care in the early postpartum period. Current support systems are insufficient.

Implications for practice

A shift to a proactive, mother-centred model of care is needed to safeguard maternal wellbeing.
