Mary Bateson as a Medievalist and a Representative of F. W. Maitland’s Historical and Law School

The article is devoted to scientific creativity of Miss Mary Bateson (1865—1906) — talented scholar of F. W. Maitland; she dealt with the research of municipal history of medieval England as well as with history of customary law and medieval monasticism. She’s revealed as an outstanding representative of Maitland’s historical and law school (school of critical trend of the 19th — the first half of the 20th centuries), which had greatly influenced on the history of formation of national historiographies of the period. One of the key questions, mentioned in the article, is a problem of specific approaches of the 19th — the first half of the 20th centuries historians to the ways of publishing of archive materials as well as the scopes of these published sources in the historical researches of nowadays.
