Their exceptional metabolic diversity, rapid growth, ability to thrive under varied environmental conditions, and capacity to transform renewable resources into valuable biomass place them at the intersection of environmental remediation, climate mitigation, renewable energy, food, human health, cosmetics, agriculture, and biomaterials. Yet, despite decades of scientific progress, their industrial potential remains largely untapped.
