Mapping Sustainability Innovation Performance and Its Management: An Integrative Framework

Sustainability innovation performance (SIP) has become central to how organizations innovate, yet the field remains fragmented: Terms are used inconsistently, measures are nonstandardized, and reviews rarely integrate its layers. Drawing on a systematic review of 53 peer‐reviewed articles, we develop the Sustainability Innovation Management Map (SIM‐Map), an integrative framework clustering 66 internal and external factors, six categories of management practices, and multidimensional SIP outcomes at the organizational level. We clarify the SIP construct, distinguishing it from adjacent terms such as green and eco‐innovation performance, and ground the framework theoretically in Dynamic Capability Theory, complemented by Stakeholder Theory, to explain how and why antecedents produce SIP through management practices. The SIM‐Map surfaces underexplored areas, including social outcomes and project‐level practices, and supports consistent measurement. It offers researchers a shared vocabulary and managers actionable guidance for embedding sustainability into innovation.
