Mapping research evidence with a scoping review
Inma Álvarez, Mara Fuertes GutiérrezAbstract
This chapter aims to provide a reflective account on the process of conducting a scoping review. For these purposes, we use as a case study a review undertaken to explore the breadth and depth of team teaching approaches and practices in languages in higher education institutions. We explore how we designed the research study and navigated the unexpected issues that arose when following the five-stage framework developed by
Arksey and O’Malley’s (2005)
for this type of review. We also
critically assess this established methodological
approach highlighting potential alternatives and offer guidance for researchers interested in conducting scoping reviews in the field of
Applied Linguistics.
