Mapping, dynamism, thematic evolution of the scientific production on Make up or Beauty products and cancer: A scientometric study

BACKGROUND:

In recent years, there has been increasing interest in understanding whether there is a relationship between the use of beauty products and the development of cancer. This study aims to map and analyze the scientific production published on this topic, identifying its evolution, collaboration dynamics, and academic impact.

MATERIAL AND METHODS:

To comply with transparency and quality, the guidelines defined by the RAMIBS framework when conducting scientometric studies were adhered to. A search was conducted in the Scopus database on March 21, 2025, and 1,996 articles published from 2022 to 2024 were collected. The data were then analyzed by using SciVal and the Bibliometrix package in R Studio. The analytics examined included number of papers, citations per publication, source, author, institution, country, international collaboration, and thematic analysis based on co-occurrence of keywords.

RESULTS:

Between 2022 and 2025, the analysis revealed an average of 3.7 citations per document, with an average of 7.4 co-authors per article and international participation in 14.8% of the cases. Notable journals included Computers in Biology and Medicine and Medical Physics, and institutions such as the Mayo Clinic and Sun Yat-Sen University. Authors such as Bruns and Wang showed high productivity and impact. The countries with the highest collaboration were the United States, China, and Germany. Thematic analysis identified relevant clusters such as “breast cancer”, “deep learning”, and “skin cancer”, reflecting the evolution of approaches in the area.

CONCLUSION:

The growing volume of scientific evidence reflects an increasingly collaborative and technologically advanced research landscape. This ongoing expansion underscores the importance of sustained monitoring to better understand the potential cancer-related risks associated with cosmetic product use, ultimately informing safer practices and public health strategies.
