Seweta Srivastava, Gaurav Sharma, Chandra Mohan MehtaAbstract
The case study series ‘Managing Waste for a Cleaner Planet: Global Lessons in Sustainability’ highlights the contrasting challenges and opportunities faced by India in diverse socio-economic contexts. Particular emphasis is placed on the National Food Security Act, the Public Distribution System, the Pradhan Mantri Kisan SAMPADA Yojana, the Pradhan Mantri Formalisation of Micro Food Processing Enterprises Scheme, the Indian Food Sharing Alliance, and the Swachh Bharat Mission, highlighting their contributions to reducing postharvest losses, strengthening food redistribution, improving waste management, and promoting circular economy practices in India. The case further explores the environmental, economic, and social implications of food waste in India, identifies existing policy and infrastructure gaps, and discusses opportunities to strengthen food system resilience through improved cold-chain infrastructure, food processing, waste segregation, composting, and stakeholder participation. By presenting India’s experiences, achievements, and continuing challenges, this case provides practical insights for policy makers, educators, researchers, and industry stakeholders seeking sustainable and scalable approaches to food waste reduction. The importance of adapting waste management strategies to local conditions while leveraging global best practices provides an actionable insight for policy makers, educators, and industries aiming for effective waste reduction.
