Purpose

To study the effect of a new formulation of a topical NSAIDs compared to placebo as an adjuvant therapy for the management of postoperative pseudophakic corneal edema.

Patients and methods

Fifty patients with postoperative pseudophakic corneal edema were recruited in the study. Twenty-eight patients received a topical treatment of ibuprofen 0.1%, and 22 patients received topical placebo in a standardized three times daily dosage for 4 weeks. Anterior segment optical coherence tomography imaging was done at the pretreatment visit and after 4 weeks of topical treatment.

Results

No adverse outcomes or complications were recorded during the follow-up duration of the study. A notable decrease in corneal thickness was observed, with a mean reduction of 82.1µm (range, 12–94), and a significant improvement of visual acuity in 21 (75%) eyes was observed in the ibuprofen group ( P <0.001). In comparison to the placebo group, only one (4.54%) patient had significant improvement of visual acuity and a mean improvement of 4.2 μm of corneal thickness.

Conclusions

The topical administration of ibuprofen 0.1% is a safe and beneficial in the treatment armamentarium for postoperative pseudophakic corneal edema.
