Một số đặc điểm ngoại thương dưới triều Nguyễn thời kỳ Minh Mạng (1820-1840)

Phúc Lê Văn

Foreign trade under the Nguyen Dynasty during the reign of Minh Mang (1820–1840) has long been interpreted through the conventional lens of a “closed-door” policy (be quan toa cang). However, recent scholarship indicates that external trade was actively maintained. By cross-examining primary Nguyen-dynasty sources with regional trade studies of Dai Nam, East Asia, and Southeast Asia, this article employs historical, logical, and comparative methods to delineate the core characteristics of foreign trade during this era. The findings demonstrate that foreign trade under King Minh Mang was heavily state-dominated and selectively maintained. While maintaining a relatively broad geographical reach, commercial activities were strictly aligned with the court’s national defense and security imperatives. Although this model enabled Dai Nam to sustain regional economic integration and secure essential strategic resources, it constrained market flexibility and private merchant initiative. Ultimately, the article conceptualizes foreign trade during the Minh Mang reign as a highly controlled state-monopolized model, reflecting the court’s strategy to balance economic interests with internal stability, national security, and territorial sovereignty.
