Lower eyelid myxosarcoma in a dog reconstructed using a superficial temporal axial pattern flap

Anne‐Sophie Tommy‐Martin, Arnaud Baldinger

Abstract

The superficial temporal axial pattern flap is a myocutaneous flap with a high survival rate and a low complication rate (often minor) for post‐traumatic maxillofacial reconstruction or in the context of oncological surgery. This report describes a case of recurrent palpebral myxosarcoma in an 8‐year‐old labrador retriever, surgically removed in a single‐stage surgical procedure with one minor postoperative complication. The histological examination confirmed the diagnosis of myxosarcoma and tumour‐free margins. Skin reconstruction with the superficial temporal flap allowed 100% wound coverage with a minor complication in this case (oedema managed with medical treatment). Preservation of functional facial structures (facial musculature, oral function) and a satisfactory cosmetic appearance for the animal and its owners were also constituent elements that should be considered in the oncological surgical approach.
