Long-Term Remission of Recurrent Ocular Surface Squamous Neoplasia with Interferon Alpha-2b Monotherapy: A Case Report

Abstract

Ocular surface squamous neoplasia (OSSN) encompasses a spectrum of dysplastic and neoplastic lesions affecting the conjunctiva and cornea, often resulting in significant visual morbidity. This case report describes a 74-year-old farmer with a history of previously treated OSSN who presented with recurrence after 3 years. The lesion was successfully treated with perilesional and topical interferon alpha-2b (IFNα2b), without the need for any surgical intervention. A remarkable reduction in the tumor size was seen at 3 months, with complete clinical resolution and visual improvement by 10 months. The patient remained recurrence-free over a follow-up period of 3 years. This study highlights the efficacy of IFNα2b monotherapy as a first-line therapeutic option for recurrent OSSN, offering a noninvasive alternative to surgical excision, while ensuring remission and preservation of vision.
