Localised damaging winds in the vicinity of shallow convection, 29 March 2026
Dan Holley, David Smart, Matthew R. Clark, Sarah L. HortonAbstract
On 29 March 2026, a localised swathe of damaging winds affected parts of northern and eastern England, producing notable damage from southeastern Yorkshire to north Lincolnshire. Analysis of damage reports indicates that ‘straight‐line’ winds were the dominant cause, occurring near shallow convection no more than 3–4km deep. The convection developed on the rearward side of a shallow moist zone along a surface cold front, beneath a deep tropopause fold and associated mid‐tropospheric jet streak. Radial velocities of up to 35ms −1 were detected at an elevation of ~1km, while the radar echoes eventually evolved into a distinct mesoscale circulation.
