Living Labs as Drivers for Regenerative Tourism in Rural Areas

Abstract

As research and transfer institutions, living labs connect applied sciences with local communities, industry and politics. Through continuous dialogue and engagement, living labs act as drivers for transformation and innovation to develop future-oriented solutions together. This article discusses the role of living labs as drivers for the development of regenerative tourism in rural areas, with a focus on the integration of participation and co-creation. The living lab concept can be used to address complex challenges, which can contribute to regenerative tourism. The Living Lab Tourism, Sustainability and Well-being, Germany’s only living lab in a rural area focused on tourism, serves as an illustrative example.
