Livelihood Uncertainty at Micro Farming Ecosystems from a Score of Socio-ecological Determinants
Abhishek Roy, Akash Mondal, Sankar Kumar AcharyaThe worst and painstaking reality for farming diaspora is livelihood uncertainty. The problem is polyhedral. Market, weather, income, wage and critical inputs, all are unpredictable to our farmers while they are to sustain their family and nation out of tiny and fragmented holdings. The present study takes care of analysing the confronted uncertainty in their echelon of livelihood. A count of eighty farmers from village Kashthadanga were selected, mainly the owners of marginal and para marginal holdings to elucidate the nature, character and intensity of confronted uncertainty inflicting the psychic ecosystem of operating farmers. Out of 17 determinants, income and crop diversity indices have been isolated as to having telling impact on livelihood uncertainty. Therefore, we have to get our farmers free from habit of mono-cropping and low crop intensity farming. While uncertainty is a systemic and endemic threat, we have to change our strategy, crop geometry and clichés of classical practices.
