Leveraging Technology for Group Effectiveness: An Educational Model to Facilitate Group Development and Leadership Learning

Paige Haber-Curran, William Smedick

As individuals increasingly engage in group work across in-person, hybrid, and virtual settings, it is essential for educators to intentionally design and facilitate group experiences that support both effective teamwork and meaningful leadership learning for students. In this chapter, we present a model to guide educators in leveraging the group experience as a space for learning through engaging – and a learning space that values process just as much as outcomes. Grounded in group development and leadership frameworks – including Tuckman’s stages of group development, Lencioni’s Five Dysfunctions of a Team, the emotionally intelligent leadership (EIL) model, and the relational leadership model (RLM) – we introduce a three-phase model: plan for process, probe the process, and process the process. Across each phase, we offer strategies and tools that can be applied in a variety of learning environments and adapted to different group contexts. Rather than allowing technology to overshadow the human dynamics of collaboration, we encourage purposeful integration of tools that enhance core elements of group work. Through thoughtful design and facilitation, educators can create group experiences that foster learning, reflection, and leadership growth.
