Leveraging Faculty Data Management Systems to Address Workload Inequity
Laura P. Naumann, Samantha Jewell, Erin RiderUniversities increasingly use faculty data management systems to facilitate the completion and submission of annual reviews and promotion/tenure dossiers. A key feature of many platforms is the documentation of work activities that can be used for faculty evaluation or accreditation. This case study used O'Meara et al.'s (2022) Equity-Minded Faculty Workload framework to customize the faculty data management system Interfolio. The project team developed tailored "Faculty Activity Reporting" fields focused on capturing typical forms of faculty work and other invisible forms of service. The intentional customization of the activity reporting suite supports institutional efforts to make faculty workload more transparent and increase recognition and credit of invisible service disproportionately engaged by women and underrepresented faculty. This article provides practical insights into adopting and customizing a faculty data management software with an eye toward fostering equity-minded workload and summarizes preliminary data evaluating group differences in faculty service activities captured in Interfolio.
