Lessons From Delivering Cantonese Opera Online in Hong Kong During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Abstract

This chapter explores the unique challenges and innovations of teaching Cantonese opera, a traditional performing art, online during COVID-19. Using qualitative data, the authors analyze how the pandemic compelled traditional practitioners to adapt to digital platforms, transforming pedagogical approaches and expanding institutional capacity. Despite initial resistance and technological limitations, instructors successfully leveraged online modalities to maintain instructional quality, improve student engagement, and foster new pedagogical strategies. The chapter highlights critical lessons on resource allocation, faculty development, and the significance of cultural adaptation in digital education contexts, offering insights for similar performing arts programs.
