Learning the Skills of Sustaining

Pasi Heikkurinen

Abstract

The content of Chapter 11 makes a case for becoming more skilled in the process of sustainability. It gives significance to proper conceptualization (including an analysis of the origins and relations of terms), and it defines the concept of skill and the implied cleavage between knowledge and action. An ideal of knowledge which detaches itself from the community of ‘know-hows’ is narrowing down our lifeworld. Skill is connected to practical knowing, and the degree of skilfulness is dictated by the community of practitioners. There are no external criteria for skilful sustaining. Sustaining is yet skilful here when it succeeds in sustaining.
