Learning Processes in Science Teams: How Do Human-AI Scientists Learn From Each Other While Developing Collaborative AI

Stephen M. Fiore, Rhyse Bendell

This study examines how scientists in interdisciplinary programs learn from one another during collaboration. Researchers who participated in large scale research projects on human-AI teaming were surveyed about their collaborative experiences. Survey results show that regular cross-team meetings, careful listening, and adaptive communication are central to effective integration, while terminology conflicts and coordination costs persist. Findings highlight interaction structures and integrative roles as key levers for improving interdisciplinary teamwork. Framed within the context of the science of team science, the discussion highlights the support needed for interdisciplinary structures and processes enabling effective scientific collaboration.
