Learning by Design

Mary Kalantzis, Bill Cope, Gabriela C. Zapata
The second edition of Learning by Design offers a renewed account of pedagogy, curriculum, assessment, and education for contemporary classrooms. Building on the original work, this edition examines the educational realities of a world shaped by digital media, cultural and linguistic diversity, cybersocial systems, and generative artificial intelligence. It also extends Learning by Design’s practical account into second and heritage language classrooms in the United States, bringing the framework into conversation with literacies-oriented pedagogy, cultural wealth, translanguaging, open educational resources, critical inquiry, and AI-supported teaching and learning.Speaking in both a theoretical and practical voice, Learning by Design gives educators a shared language for making learning more explicit, reflective, collaborative, and purposeful. Digital and AI tools are treated not as ends in themselves, but as resources whose educational value depends on thoughtful pedagogical design. The result is a timely resource for educators, teacher educators, researchers, and graduate students interested in designing learning environments that are inclusive, critical, and creative.
