Lauding the Linnaean Legacy: New Infrafamilial and Hybrid Names in Selected Families and Genera

Run-Hua Jiang, Su Liu, Zhen-Hao Feng
Since the rise of the “Revolution of Molecular Cladistics” for plant taxonomy in 1990s, traditional plant classification systems based primarily on macromorphological characters have gradually been substituted with molecular plant classification systems. In the process of revising the classification system and world checklist of families and genera of angiosperms on the basis of the latest research in molecular phylogenetic systematics, a new batch of additional names of infrafamilial and hybrid taxa were found to require publication. In this paper, 78 names are newly published for the infrafamilial and hybrid taxa in 26 families. These taxa include nine subfamilies (Alyxioideae, Amsonioideae, Hunterioideae, Melodinoideae, Manihotoideae, Suregadoideae, Coptosapeltoideae, Amphorogynoideae, and Cervantesioideae), 14 tribes, 20 subtribes, 11 nothogenera, 17 nothospecies, and seven nothosubspecies. In addition, a replacement name, Zidornia (Asteraceae) and two new genera, Sinammatia , and Ukrainodoxa (both Oleaceae), as well as new combinations for nine species and five subspecies accordingly, are also proposed. Lectotypes are designated for Syringa × diversifolia , Syringa × henryi , Syringa josikaea , and Syringa yunnanensis , and neotypes are designated for Syringa × nanceiana and Syringa × prestoniae . Moreover, the former lectotypification for Syringa wolfii is rejected. These updates help us present a renewed classification system of angiosperms (especially for the flora of China and East Asia) kept with the Linnaean paradigm.
