Greek in faith yet Latin in language; Orthodox in confession yet Catholic in educational outlook—the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy defied traditional categories. Indeed, its professors would cross political and confessional borders in search of education and return with new ideas, shaping the learned elite of the Cossack Hetmanate and leaving a lasting imprint on Ukrainian culture. This book explores why Kyiv turned to Western learning, how that shift led to the Academy’s foundation, and how scholastic Aristotelianism was taught there from the early 17th century until the arrival of German scholarship in the mid-18th century. Drawing on manuscripts, student journeys, and concealed textual borrowings, it presents the Academy as a vibrant intersection of cultures in early modern Europe.
